Essen is home to the UNESCO World Heritage Site Zeche Zollverein, often referred to as the "most beautiful coal mine in the world." This iconic site offers a deep dive into industrial culture, featuring guided tours, events and dining experiences at the once largest and most powerful coal mine in the world and the largest central coking plant in Europe.
Nature lovers will also find plenty to explore, including the Baldeneysee recreation area, the scenic Baldeneysteig trail or the Grugapark. The city’s annual Christmas market, held for six weeks at locations including Kennedyplatz, attracts international visitors. It has received the award for “Best Christmas Market in Germany” for the third time in a row (2023, 2024, 2025) and was voted “Best Sustainable Christmas Market in Europe” in 2025.
